Seems like there’s a whole bunch of family stuff going on in Fishtown and environs these days. The latest addition to the scene? City Sprouts Maternity, a parenting center (complete with pregnancy and childbirth services!) that opened in November with a cool urban warehouse vibe and an eco-friendly sensibility.
The brains behind the business is Jen Mastalerz, an expectant mom who got her entrepreneurial start running a successful local compost business of the same name–City Sprouts. If it seems like a jump to go from focusing on composting to focusing on parenting, well … the simple explanation is that Jen’s commitment centers around the needs of the community–and the Fishtown/No Libs/Kensington community clearly benefits from having a place where both a midwife and a doula have set up office, a place that offers breastfeeding support groups, a place with a new-parents group that meets weekly, and a place that’s a child-friendly space (complete with a little reading corner!). There’s also retail along the lines of cloth diapers and accessories, locally made toys, artwork, children’s books and more great gift-y sort of goods. (It’s all adorable.)
Jen says she’s also working on regular story times and music classes for little ones (yay!), but in the meantime, it’s definitely worth the drop-by if you’re in or near the neighborhood and you’re expecting, or a new mom, or an experienced parent (or non-parent) just in the market for some cute baby gifts. (The retail side of the business has limited hours, so check the site before you go!) The entrance is tucked away on East Dakota, a teeny vein of a street that’s very easy to pass by. I parked on Frankford Avenue, where street parking was ample and free, and then just walked the block or so over.
